The St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative (which operates the St. John’s Farmers’ Market and manages the St. John’s Community Market facility) is hiring! Now is the chance to join a dynamic team and have a hand in running one of St. John’s favourite places.

Market Manager

Since its founding in 2008, the St. John’s Farmers’ Market – and the dual-stakeholder cooperative that runs it – has become a cornerstone of the local food movement and the community. With “Make it, Bake it, Grow it” as our motto the Market has steadily expanded our efforts to provide healthy, local food to the community, while encouraging farmers and crafters to grow their businesses.

In the summer of 2018, the Market took a big step towards long-term sustainability, moving from a rented space into a purpose-built permanent home in the St. John’s Community Market facility on Freshwater Road. We expanded in size, capacity, and expanded our intake of vendors. The role of the Market Manager was integral to this process, and remains key to running the St. John’s Farmers’ Market on Market days.

The SJFM cooperative is seeking a dynamic and engaged person to fill the role of Market Manager. The individual in this position will manage the week-to-week operations of the Farmers’ Markets, including, but not limited to selecting a diverse mix of market vendors and managing all elements of bookings for market days. The ideal candidate would be high-energy and very well organized, technologically savvy, and have exceptional people skills, with the ability to connect with our market community in an inclusive way.

Reporting to the SJFM Executive Director, the Market Manager is responsible for:

  • Vendor selection and retention
  • Working with ServiceNL to arrange food vendor inspections
  • Organizing the jurying process of market vendors
  • Booking vendors for market days
  • Ensuring food safety compliance
  • Overseeing market set­up and break down
  • Collecting and reconciling vendor table fees
  • Awareness and enforcement of Market policy
  • Dispute resolution
  • Meticulous record keeping
  • Market evaluation
  • Communicating information to vendors
  • Attendance of some Committee meetings
  • Other duties as required

To fill this challenging, busy, and exciting role, the ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

  • An interest and passion for the success of a community-based Farmers’ Market
  • Experience working within a professional business capacity with a diverse population
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally
  • Demonstrated commitment to working as a team
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Physical ability to set up and move tables and booths, as well as circulate through the vendor stalls on Market days (approx 15 kilos)
  • Proficient with email, databases, and office technology, with strong communication skills
  • Experience with counting and recording money transactions

As this position requires the manager to handle cash and interact with a diverse community, a Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check will be required. The Market Manager will also require a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.  The Market Manager may, from time to time, also be called upon to assist with other events in the Community Market space. Some flexibility in scheduling may be required.

Asset Qualifications

  • Previous experience in Market Management, Co-Operatives, or Trade Show organization
  • An understanding of food safety/OHS requirements
  • Experience working with a volunteer board
  • Financial literacy and basic bookkeeping
  • Conflict management skills
  • Previous experience managing a farmers’ market would be a definite asset


$37,000-$42,000 annually, commensurate with experience
