The St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative (which operates the St. John’s Farmers’ Market and manages the St. John’s Community Market facility) is hiring! Now is the chance to join a dynamic team and have a hand in running one of St. John’s favourite places.

Open positions and contracts:

Marketing and Promotions Assistant

The SJFM is looking for a social media star and communications ninja to join our team.

Do you speak excellent hashtag? Are you handy with a camera? Approachable and interested in meeting our amazing community? This might be the gig for you. Be warned: it does involve spending your weekends at the Farmers’ Market, so we can’t guarantee against weight gain!

Duties:

  • Attending Farmers’ Markets and other events to gather social media and marketing content
  • Developing themes and processes for social media outreach
  • Writing social media posts, designing content using SJFM brand standards, and scheduling posts
  • Updating  vendor lists and other bits and pieces on the SJFM website
  • Responding to messages received through social media platforms
  • Developing marketing materials such as pamphlets and brochures
  • Assisting with the marketing of the Community Market as an event rental space

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and comfort with social media
  • Experience with updating website through WordPress
  • The ability to create content and graphics
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Flexibility in scheduling and the ability to be on-site for events and Markets
  • Enthusiasm for community and local production

Hours, Contract Length and Compensation

  • This is 34-week contract with the possibility of extension dependent on funding availability
  • Hours are expected to be approximately 20 per week. This would include required on-site time during Market events, with remaining hours distributed throughout the week to suit both schedules.
  • Total value of the contract is $12,000

Operations Assistant

Full Time – 16 week contract with the possibility of extension

Are you a quick learner, a great communicator, an ace with a spreadsheet? Are you game to grab a measuring tape and head out on the Market Hall floor? You might be the next member of the SJFM team and have a chance to help run one of St. John’s most vital community spaces. The SJFM Cooperative is growing and we’re looking for another set of hands to work closely with our Market Manager and Executive Director.

The Operations Assistant provides a variety of support to the Cooperative’s management team to help them organize regular Farmers’ Markets, maximize community use of the St. John’s Community Market Facility, and explore new opportunities for the Cooperative.

Day-to-day duties will be wide-ranging but are likely to include:

  • Data entry and record-keeping
  • Assistance with Market layout and scheduling
  • Responding to customer and client inquiries
  • Basic website content updates
  • Supporting community partnerships

The ideal candidate is:

  • An outgoing and flexible worker with a passion for community
  • An excellent communicator, particularly over email
  • A self-starter that can see the big picture of what needs doing
  • Computer-literate and very comfortable with Google Docs, Word and Excel
  • Willing to take on some physical work helping with markets and events
  • Available during Market Hours – we work weekends.
  • Has a driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Able to provide a Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check upon request.

Compensation:

This is a full-time position, 35 hours per week at $17.00 per hour

Market Support Staff

Part-Time and Casual – Four Positions Available

Want to work at one of the most friendly, multicultural and high-energy places in the city?  The St. John’s Farmers’ Market is looking for part-time and casual staff to help support the flow of operations on market days, and to help with events and clean up outside market hours.

Typical duties include:

  • helping to make the Market experience a great one for customers, and vendors,
  • working as a team to keep the market clean and neat by tidying common areas
  • cleaning dishes, trash, and the general market areas,
  • making sure washrooms are clean and well stocked,
  • directing the flow of traffic in our parking lots,
  • assisting in the café during special events
  • and other duties as needed

We’re looking for people who:

  • are outgoing, with a passion for community
  • are willing to dive in and work in a variety of roles within the Market as needed
  • have a strong sense of teamwork and ability to follow instructions
  • have the ability to work weekends, plus additional availability throughout the week
  • are capable of working in a fast-paced, crowed, and noisy environment,
  • are comfortable working on your feet and are physically able to lift up to 25 lbs if needed.

About the Job:

  • This is a part-time or casual position depending on your availability.
  • Preference will be given to people who have full weekend availability.
  • Wages are $12.00 per hour
  • Hours could vary. (Typically between 8 – 20 hours per week, depending on what events are happening)
