Andy, our beagle, is the inspiration for Licks & Wags, and our official taste tester for all our treats.
After taking a chocolate making course a couple of years ago, we started to create some chocolate treats for special occasions, like Easter and Christmas. It was just something fun to do together.
Then we discovered Carob, a tree in the pea family, native and mainly cultivated in the Mediterranean region. The ripe, dried pod is often ground to carob powder, which is used to replace cocoa powder due to its similar taste. Unlike chocolate, carob is naturally sweet, low in fat, high in fiber, has calcium, and no caffeine. And, even though, it is not as straight forward to melt and temper as chocolate is, we still managed to create some treats for Andy, and he simply loved them! Our “chocolate-like” treats are 100% free of chocolate or cocoa, making it safe for dogs.
In mid-2016, after looking around for something different in the market and noticing the lack of chocolate-like treats, we decided to make it ourselves. And that’s how Licks & Wags Gourmet Dog Treats came to be.
Our gourmet treats combine carob with other natural ingredients dogs already love, such as bacon, apple, peanut butter and honey, making them a perfect treat your dog will lick and wag for!
All our treats are made in our own kitchen, right here in St. John’s, NL. Andy supervises and cleans up anything that falls on the floor right away.
